The north is on fire. Yellowknife has issued an evacuation order and the hamlet of Enterprise has burned to the ground.  Twenty-two thousand people plus, are on the move, heading south.  We are 1500 km south of Yellowknife and some people will be coming here, while some will continue even further south to Red Deer.  The evacuation centres between here and Yellowknife are already all full.

Fires continue to burn on Maui and the death toll there continues to rise as they find the bodies left in the burned wreckage of Lahaina.

The Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, has put a moratorium on all new starts of renewable energy projects in the province.  This is where I live and I can tell you the majority of Albertans do not support this nutjob.

It feels like world is burning and nobody gives a shit.

Suncor, a large oilsands company, has a new CEO.  His name is Rich Kruger and he had this to say.

"“We have a bit of a disproportionate emphasis on the longer-term energy transition,” Kruger said, adding that while lower emissions energy is important, it is not what is going to make money for shareholders today."

Basically, fuck the future generations, lets get rich now.  I am livid!

On a happier note, I filed the papers for day to day parenting of Jack today and just have to serve his parents.  Detox won't let me serve the papers and I don't know where my son is right now; things will work out though. The woman who helped me at the Alberta Court of Justice was so kind and helpful; it made the day so much more bearable.  And the best news is that the other two guardians, the aunt and the other grandma, both support our applications.  When the other grandma texted me that information yesterday, I burst into tears at work.

I still feel overwhelmed and shaky but I'm okay, whereas so many are not right now.  I'm thankful that Yellowknife is evacuating before the fire hits the city.

  1. I saw this on twitter. Airlines have jacked up their prices for people trying to leave the area. This is heart breaking. The sorrow level in this world is just unsustainable.

  2. Well. I will concentrate on the good news of you moving forward to take Jack full-time. I just finished reading a blog post of a woman who lives in Hawaii and fire is spreading near where she lives as we speak.

  3. Massive respect and admiration for all the hard work you do for this boy.
As for being livid, I hear you, so what is the next step? We need to get beyond these helpless feelings of doomerism. Yes, the news on climate change are bad, but the solutions have continued to get better.
In the words of Rebecca Solnit: "You can feel absolutely devastated about the situation and not assume this predicts outcome; you can have your feelings and can still chase down facts from reliable sources, and the facts tell us that the general public is not the problem; the fossil fuel industry and other vested interests are; that we have the solutions, that we know what to do, and that the obstacles are political; that when we fight we sometimes win; and that we are deciding the future now."
We all have work to do. We have complained enough.

  4. The fire situation in the NWT is appallingly awful. I feel bad for all the evacuees but at least the authorities are acting proactively before it's too late to get people out.

Can a Detox facility obstruct justice by refusing service of legal documents? I'd be inclined to phone the Alberta Sheriffs Office about that or check back with the court office. I bet if a Sheriff were serving the document, they would not refuse entry.

  5. I do not understand the shortsightedness of these people in power; do they not have children and grandchildren that have to try to survive in this polluted inferno that they're creating? As my late dad used to say, "It's all about the Almighty Dollar." I am so distressed and frustrated by the horrors that humans are perpetuating on our planet. Your news about the guardianship is a welcome positive in this.

  7. Yay for Jack's future. I am sure, given a few months to realise he is safe, he will blossom and his moods will return to normal small child outbursts.

  10. Good news on the custody papers and that woman who helped you proved that when you are an official position you do not have to be an arsehole.

Regarding working constructively to reduce carbon emissions and make a more environmentally friendly world, I fear that we might as well forget it. There is such disunity and politicians only tend to look four or five years ahead. Before too long it will all be too late.

  11. It's really scary, what's happening to our planet. And we have a hurricane headed for Southern California! Surreal.

Like you, I don't get the concern about shareholders. I think one of the most destructive notions to infect modern business is Milton Friedman's idea that companies exist first and foremost to make money for their shareholders, everyone else be damned.

  13. Profit over everything else. The world burns and they keep fiddling.

I'm so happy you are taking Jack on full-time. This is wonderful and kudos to you.

  14. So sorry to hear of the natural disasters playing out there... and... well, everywhere. We dodged the bullet of the Tropical Storm that hit the West Coast, I hope that does not become the New Normal tho'. Glad to hear your application for Jack's benefit is being supported and should go well.
