Spring has arrived.  Today, as we worked in the backyard, we could hear the call of the sandhill cranes as they flew overhead.  Hundreds of these beautiful birds fly over our house every spring and I'm just thankful that I happened to move into a house that is on their annual migration route.

Jack is back with us, his mom is having a meltdown, again.  I'm just thankful he's safe and home with us.  He is too.

Something's got to give.  His other grandma is worried about Gracie trying to kill herself; she sees Gracie much more clearly now which is sad for her, but a good thing in the long run.  Jack's auntie still thinks Gracie is just stressed.  She doesn't understand mental illness and self medication.  She's young.  She still has hope.

I don't have hope for Gracie anymore.  Now I just want Jack to be safe.

  1. I'm so glad he's back with you. It is both an advantage and a burden to see situations and people clearly. It hurts.

  2. It's so sad for Gracie's mom - she must be worried sick - but I'm glad Jack is safe with you. He has to be your priority in all this!

  3. I have noticed how you now keep showing Jack from behind in your photos. I guess this is for his protection but I would like to see his mischievous face again. I have never met Gracie but I can't help feeling sorry for her and wondering where it all went wrong. If only life could be like a videotape that can be rewound in order to record over the mistakes and the wrong directions.

  4. I have been thinking that spring must be upon you. And your spring is so beautiful.
The sandhill cranes are such amazing birds. There are places in Florida that they live. They fly over my friends' house near Gainesville every evening at five during parts of the year.
I cannot imagine what Gracie's mother must be going through. I cannot imagine what YOU are going through. But Jack is in such good hands.

  5. I've never heard sandhill cranes before! And yes, keeping Jack safe is the important thing. It's a good thing he's got you in his life.

  6. We see lots of sandhill cranes in west-central Florida -- maybe not the same ones that migrate over your house. (I'm guessing they're a more western population?) I'm glad Jack is with you and hope Gracie gets the help she needs, whatever that may be.

  8. That video of the cranes is so good! I always hear them flying high overhead and never knew this -- one makes one sound, another the other. Very cool. Thank you. Love your top pic too; you can start shopping your photos around to magazines anytime! Hope things work out for Jack once and for all. -Kate

  9. Mental illness is a hard road. I hope Gracie will be okay. Most of all, I hope Jack gets to stay in your care. He seems so happy there.

  10. The cranes have a lovely call. I can imagine a flock would be amazing.
Jack is lucky to be back with you but I do feel for the wee lad being moved from pillar to post. Now that Gracie's mum is more aware could there not be an approach to the powers that be for a more settled homelife?

  11. It's tough, is there hope for Gracie to receive some form of therapy? I love the crane call.

  12. That's kind of where we are. I just don't have hope for change. All we can do is insure that William is safe. So far, there has been no discussion that they want him back, so that is a bit of a relief. We've decided that we will not initiate any of the discussion. It just amazes me that there seems to be no desire to get him back. They seem quite happy to leave that responsibility with us. For our part, we are glad to take it on.
