I finished Miss Katie's quilt a couple of days ago.  I like how it turned out and a nine patch is much easier than other quilts I have tried.  I'm a fan of easy.  Now I just need to get it to the quilter who has moved to Beaumont.

It's bloody cold here this morning, -27C, and the house feels cold, even with the heat on.  Yesterday I had a bunch of errands to run so I spent three hours driving around in the snow and got everything done, except buy new underwear for Jack.

Lucy has the right idea of what to do when it's cold.

Jack is doing so well with his toilet training, it's just a matter of keeping pull ups off of him and he's fine, peeing and pooping in the potty.  If I put a diaper or pull up on him, he can't be bothered to go to the toilet, so underwear is in order.  He's also learned how to lock the bathroom door from the inside so I keep a knife handy to unlock the door.

Last night after supper I whipped some cream to put on top of our key lime pie and he wanted to lick the beaters.  I told him sure and then he asked what he was eating, I told him whipping cream.  He was quiet for a moment and then he said, "Whipping cream like bum cream?"  I told him that no, the two were very different which then turned into a disccusion about the ingredients of both whipping cream and bum cream.  We did not however go into a discussion about the mechanical, electrical and optical properties of zinc oxide because I was completely unaware of them until I googled it this morning.  Thank goodness.

Gracie has called for a video chat every night this week.  The first night was good, the second night, less good and last night was bad.  He didn't want to talk to her and told her so.  He also ratted me out for yelling at him.  I yelled at him, not loudly, because he punched me and I told him to stop punching my arm, at which point he told me, "that a bad word".  Apparently "stop" and "don't" are bad words, in his mind.

Yesterday I texted Gracie and asked her if I could take Jack for a covid vaccination but she refused because he's too young (he's not) and because she got sick with her vaccinations (doesn't mean he will get sick and I'm the one taking care of him if he does get sick).  I took him for his flu vaccination but just didn't tell her.  He's had flu vaccinations every year since he was a baby, she just doesn't know that.
Sigh.

I've been watching "Santa Clarita Diet" while I've been quilting.  I gotta say, I love this series and I know it's five years old but I just started using my neighbor's streaming service, which shall remain unnamed ( she gave me the password).  As long as you're not put off my blood and gore (I'm not, I'm a nurse) it's so funny.

Other than that, not much.  Going to try and stay warm today, bake Christmas cookies and maybe start another quilt.

A funny, because the world needs more funny.

  1. Yes! What a beautiful quilt. I can't believe how quickly you can make one.
Gracie is just full of motherly instincts, isn't she? (Heavy sarcasm.)
It is too cold there! How do you stand it? I suppose you are used to it.
Hurray for Jack learning to use the potty! He was ready, I think. Big boy underwear definitely called for.

    1. Thanks Mary but the quilt took almost a year to make. I stopped working on it for the summer and last winter was kind of a mess with family shit.

It is too damned cold here. We have the clothes for it but it's still unpleasant.

  2. The quilt is lovely! My 2-year-old grandson had no reaction from his 3 Covid vaccinations. Gracie is just into control. She can't/won't control herself so she tries to do so with others. Happy to hear about Jack's toilet training. I wish my grandson would show more interest. That is unbelievably cold. I guess I would rather have the 4 or so inches of SNOW we got dumped with last night. :(

    1. It's funny you should say that because today while she was abusing me by text message, she told me that I was a control freak.

  3. Ack. I got the phone to convert -27 to F and that is extraordinarily cold. It makes my grumbling about cold seem frivolous. Your quilt looks good, my squares we generally not that precise. Yay for Jack, using the potty.

  4. Beautiful quilt. Really! It won't be long before Jack gets this potty thing down. Does Gracie need to know if Jack has a Cover vaccination? We are about the same temperature, 17 F. We had a low of 3 F overnight. I guess you and I are having winter!

    1. I love snow but I'm not a fan of the cold. Winter can bite me.

I thought about just taking Jack for his covid vaccination, I can, I'm a guardian, but it would probably make things worse, if that's even possible.

  5. Beautiful quilt: well done.

That cold!!!!!! It's unthinkable. And here I was, cussing over 37f degrees.

As for Santa Clarita Diet.....I have to laugh because Santa Clarita is a town very close to where I grew up and I lived near it for 57 years. I just hate Santa Clarita and while we were looking for a new home, I would judge the neighborhood if it looked to "Santa Clarita" like. I simply didn't watch the show for that reason. I'll take a look. I'm in the mood for something new.

God speed on the potty front.

    1. I don't really know much about Santa Clarita. It looks like a newish city, sprawling over the desert, and I'm guessing mostly white. Although it seems to have a zombie problem:)

  6. That quilt is like a big hug for Katie. You are -27 and we are +27. And it's getting hotter. Cue grumbling about Aussie summers!
Well done on the potty front. Does he regress when he's with other carers?

    1. Show off!

Katie doesn't really care that I made the quilt, in fact, doesn't care at all, but I care.

I don't know if Jack regresses with others, it's so new. I guess we'll see.

  7. Listen! Can you hear it? It's the sound of applause for the progress you have made with Gracie's quilt! You're not just a nurse after all! Sounds like you have been having some interesting philosophical discussions with Jack.

    1. The quilt is for Katie, not Gracie. It would be a cold day in hell before I made a quilt for Gracie.

Jack and I have some very interesting conversations about everything you can imagine, or everything he can imagine.

  8. You're living on another planet as far as I'm concerned! Just this afternoon, with a bit of rain threatening "the southland," my son Henry ran outside to get something from his car and came back in saying, "Brrrrrrrr. It's freezing!" It was probably around 58! We're all weather wimps down here! You are so good to Jack -- AND THAT QUILT is gorgeous!

  9. -27????? Oh man, that's cold. And I LOVE your quilt. Can I ask, how big are the individual squares in the 9 patch?

    1. The individual squares are 3 1/2 " each. The white borders are quick and easy to add and really enlarge the quilt. It's about 100" by 100".

  10. I can't even imagine that kind of cold.

Glad the quilt turned out well! And I love the little glimpse of your Thanksgiving/Christmas cactus next to the sleeping Lucie.

The bum cream conversation is pretty funny. It's always interesting to get a glimpse of what goes on in kids' minds.

    1. Jack and I have some very interesting conversations. We watched the Guardians of The Galaxy Holiday Special the other night and he was quite horrified to hear the song about Santa. I had to explain to him that it's supposed to by funny. I tried to explain irony to him. Didn't go over well.

  11. Do you Need her Permission for Jack's Immunization for The Rona? If not, I'd just do it like the Flu Shot, he might not say anything and he wouldn't know what the shot is for anyway so you could always play it off as what Kids shots are 'due'? So funny that Stop and Don't are Bad Words to Jack, mebbe coz they have Four Letters? *LOL* Sorry that Gracie is a PITA, too bad you must Deal with her and her Illness being an unstable factor constantly, which makes me Thankful Jack has you and the other Grandparents to look out for him and stand in the Gap for a Parent not up to the job.
