It's been a busy few days and I will be thankful when school restarts on Monday and life returns to normal, complete with schedules.  On Wednesday,  (New Year's Eve), Jack played soccer at Millennium place with a bunch of other kids.  On New Year's day we went bowling and I pulled a muscle in my back and my poor husband was just in pain all over.  Today we went to Clip and Climb which was lots of fun.  I did some climbing too, which I haven't done in years so I will be sore as hell tomorrow.  I'm thinking Jack will be sore too.

Things I learned this past week.  Bowling is more strenuous than you think.  I knew climbing was strenuous but the part that made my back hurt, again, was clipping and unclipping Jack's belay rope.  Mind you, I can wake up with a sore neck these days, just from how I sleep on my pillow.  Don't even get me started on how painful it is for me to try and sit down on the toilet.  Getting up is fine, but sitting down hurts.  I could go on, but I don't feel like showing off too much.  I'm getting older:)

I am hoping for far less life lessons this year.  And I don't need anymore of the what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.  I need, we all need, more kindness this year.

  1. I've never liked the "whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger" quote. I'm strong enough and I don't need any more tests! Still, there's no saying what the universe has in store. I think bowling uses all kinds of muscles and positions we don't generally exercise. I would probably hurt myself trying to do it! I tweaked my back picking up a strand off my bathroom tile, so I wouldn't want to chance it. Hope your back will be better soon. Kids do better with routines, in my opinion. Sharky has been driving his mom crazy lately.

    1. My back is better today thankfully. It always surprises me how strenuous bowling is. It just about crippled my husband for the rest of the day poor guy. He has arthritis in his hip and it really bothered it.
I'm tired of lessons from the universe too, and yet they continue to come. It's like those clubs from years ago when the books or CDs kept coming, unless you opted out:)

  2. I haven’t bowled in years, and I thought it would be fun to try it again. Thanks for the warning! Add it to the list of things I should never do again. I think you (and your husband) are wonderful for all you do. ❤️

    1. There are lots of different ways to bowl that are less strenuous. I would give it a try again if you enjoy it. I always forget how much I enjoy it.

  3. I know someone who had to have surgery after a bowling incident. Yikes.

  4. I think you're so right to keep Jack physically busy. He seems to both need and love it (but poor you having to keep up)! Happy New Year to you all!

    1. He's much happier if he's physically active. In the summer it's easy but winter takes a bit more planning.

  5. Jack's climbing looks impressive.
I know all about waking up with a sore neck if I haven't moved around in bed at night. More sore neck may soon disappear, but at times it doesn't and is quite debilitating. I fight against it.

    1. It's so frustrating waking up with a stiff neck. It feels like I'm failing at sleeping:)

  6. I definitely agree that the saying about what doesn't kill you is malarkey. I'd rather go for kindness makes you feel stronger!
You are intrepid in your sports life!

    1. I don't want to give up quite yet on staying active. I've found that playing soccer with Jack has improved my balance which I appreciate.

  7. Here's something funny- since I took that fall last week, my neck and shoulder which have been hurting me for months have given me no problems. Of course now I have other problems but not the neck and shoulder. Silver lining? Haha!
I haven't been bowling in years and years and years. I used to love it even though I was terrible at it. Never been wall climbing and I predict I never will.
The freaking universe can keep its lessons to itself as far as I'm concerned. Why do people always have to think that there are good reasons that even the worst things happen?

    1. I've had patients that have told me that their high blood pressure went away when they developed cancer. Maybe the fall popped things back into place:)
I'm not any good at bowling either, but I do enjoy it.

  9. I wish climbing walls had been a thing when I was a kid. I bet I would have loved that, as long as I was attached to a rope. Nowadays I'm way too creaky to take that on! I used to like bowling and for a while in the '90s I bowled with some people from work, but I was never very good at it. I think my highest score was something like 110.

    1. I'm ok with climbing the wall but I'm afraid of heights and the belaying down scares the bejesus out of me. It's hard for me to let go of the wall and trust.

  10. The what doesn't kill you quote is from Nietzsche from the time when he was very much into patriotism and since it's been widely used by nazis, especially Goebbels, it really belongs to the scrap heap of quotes.
I would - and have in the past - avoid any attempt of climbing and while I admire the courage and skill and muscle power, I still ask myself, why?
    Same applies to bowling.

    1. Nietzsche, the same man who had a mental breakdown? I guess not everything makes us stronger
Some things kill us and some things only kill parts of us.

  11. Jack is getting tall! I was in a bowling league when I was in junior high. I haven't bowled since. You have been finding fantastic activities for Jack, and you. I've had a few things that could have killed me but didn't. I am pretty sure I was not made any stronger. Maybe a wee bit wiser.

    1. He had a healthy respect for heights but he also knew that the belay rope would keep him safe. He is braver than me though:)

  13. Newfoundland town is quite magical. The colours alone !
Like the articles on Canada in The National Geographic I read when young.
You made me wish I could go bowling again ; sorry you strained your back.
Having to clip and unclip Jack's belay rope : I had never heard of a belay.
It looks the best possible indoor excitement any boy or girl could have.
Back to Auld Clothes and Porridge as we say after Ne'er Day.
I hope Jack enjoys his New Year school term.

    1. A belay is like a brake on a rope, it slows you down.
Newfoundland is magical and beautiful with wonderful people. It's slightly smaller than England and it's also called the rock.
