My pottery instructor was sick one day and was upset because she felt that we had not gotten to make as much as we might have made.  She decided to send us home with some clay, to make things, and bring them back for glazing.  I'm trying to make a dish for our cat, with some success.  The bowl she has now has a chip in it and I've been wanting to replace it, and now I can.  I'm finding that it's harder than I thought to work with clay at home, messy and I don't have a roller to roll out the clay nice and evenly, but it's also nice because I have more time to fuss with things, like a crack, or something I don't quite like.  I am enjoying it though and I'm making time for it which is important for me.  There is always housework to do, but I'm ignoring it and working on my pottery.  It's not like the housework is going to go anywhere.  It'll still be there when I'm done.

However, the dogs still need walking.  I had my first photography course on Wednesday evening, not Tuesday evening as I had said.  It was good.  I did have some envy because easily half of the ten particpants were travelling and wanted to brush up on their skills before going on a safari, or to Scotland, one woman had just gotten back from Antarctica.  Sigh.  The course was very good and I still have three more classes before it's over.

I took my camera with me when I went walking at the park yesterday, to practice with ISO mostly.  I'm pretty good with apertures.  I need to work on shutter speeds as well.  Baby steps.

I received this photo of Katie from one of her caregivers this morning.  They're at the zoo and Katie is obviously enjoying herself.  The sun is shining on her and she looks relaxed.

I talked to my middle daughter this morning for awhile.  She just got back from Palm Springs where she visited her aunt for three days.  Her aunt is a heavy drinker (alcoholic), like her brother (my ex), so that wasn't great, but it wasn't all bad.  My daughter had some time away from social media, which is not easy because her job is social media.  They also went to someplace called Bombay Beach, which I had never heard of.  If you look at the photos of Bombay Beach, it looks like a post apocolyptic climate change version of the future.  The place is a ghost town because of the salanity of the lake, (Salton Sea), which killed off 97% of the fish.  The lake was destroyed by chemicals and droughts, and people abandoned their properties.  It's mostly a ghost town now.

Here's an interesting article about the Salton Sea.

I'm feeling better finally.  The general fuckery was hard to get used to, but like most things, humans learn to accomodate.  We adapt, and fortunately my poor brain can still do that.  I'm thankful and I'm most thankful I still have my sense of humour.

  1. You’re being creative in your retirement which seems like a good plan for an artistic soul like you. I do worry about us all adapting to the fuckery. But what choice do we have but to keep on living in the spaces between the madness.

  2. Your pottery bowls look damn good to me! And you're right -- screw housework! Miss Katie looks like she's having fun! I hear they have sloths now at the Edmonton zoo, how cool is that?

    1. Katie got to see Lucy the elephant. They took Katie last week but the zoo was closed and Katie had a melt down. Today it was good.

  3. I also like your pottery bowls. Katie's happiness is contagious. I needed a smile. Thanks for the information on Bombay beach and the Salton Sea. I had no idea.

  5. Your creative energy inspires me -- photography, quilting, and now pottery. Katie's enjoyment of her day at the zoo in the sunshine inspires me, too. It's a needed balance to the negative energy being generated by those unfit to govern the United States and that minority of Americans (only 32%) who voted for them.

    1. I like learning new skills. There is far too much negative energy in the world right now. My shoulders are chronically tight:)

    1. They're not hard, you use a bowl as a template, and lay the rolled out clay over them, cutting it to fit.

  7. Beautiful pottery. You do have the gift. I'm really happy you're taking photography class. I would like to go to Scotland, and the Outer Hebrides. That would warrant a new camera, for sure. I've defaulted to the cell phone, it's just easier.

    1. I usually take photos with my cell phone too, it's lighter to carry. Scotland you say, and the Outer Hebrides? Sounds amazing.

  9. It's lovely to see you take some time for yourself and your hobbies. You've had it tough and I'm glad things have started easing for you a little. Mind you, the coming of spring always helps doesn't it!

  10. Your pottery is already looking SO much better than mine. I have come to the realization that taking a pottery class for me is all about the social aspects, not the desire to make beautiful things from clay.
I had never heard of Bombay Beach although I have heard of the Salton Sea. What an interesting article and what beautiful photographs, even though they are mostly of wreck and ruin.
    I'm glad you're feeling better.

    1. That's the part I love about the pottery classes too, is the social aspects. The other ladies are wonderul.
I want to go to Bombay Beach, just to take photos.

  11. Bombay Beach looks interesting. I think I've read about it before. I know I've read about the ecological disaster that is the Salton Sea. I love some of those artworks!

Glad your pottery is progressing and you're feeling better. Katie does indeed look happy at the zoo.

  12. I admire you for involving yourself with pottery and photography. I told myself that I would take classes or piano lessons when I retired and never did. No follow through! That's wonderful that your daughters enjoyed their various visits and outings.

  13. Ah, you've discovered the Salton Sea. It came across my mental radar screen a few years ago and I became obsessed with the entire place. I bought a great book about it with amazing photos. California is still trying to figure out how to fix the problem. A man-made lake that started out as an engineering mistake, transformed into a successful resort area for a while, but ended up creating a huge ecological (and agricultural) mess. But such an interesting mess! I'm glad your daughter got to actually see the place in person.

  14. I am impressed that you are involving yourself with classes. I always enjoy looking at your photos on your blog. I loved that photo of the snow with the white birch trees. (At least I think that's what they are). They don't grow here in Virginia, but they did in upstate NY.

    1. They are birches, I think:) Mostly we have aspen and poplar trees but it's very damp where these birches are. Our snow was mostly gone and then it snowed again yesterday, not a lot, but it's cold and is supposed to get colder again this week. Oh yay.

  15. Photography is alchemy for me, no idea how it works and if it does, it's mysterious. Where does Bombay Beach get its name from? I've been to Bombay (Mumbai) in India and the city's Juhu beach, which is beautiful from a distance (scenic location, light etc.) and pretty awful in reality, at least when I was there, crowded, lots of rubbish and so on. But a fun atmosphere.

    1. Apparently Bombay Beach was called Bombay Beach to make it sound exotic. It might have been beautiful at one time but now it's a wreck that smells like rotting fish.

    1. I would love to take photos there, but I can't travel to the states for the forseeable future. I'll have to find a Canadian ghost town:)
