I stopped at a greenhouse yesterday and almost bought another orchid, but left satisfied with just a photo.  The pots for an orchid cost as much as an orchid.  I'll have to look for a cheaper second hand pot before I buy another orchid.

I talked to my daughter yesterday about painting closets and I mentioned I would like to paint my pantry, which led to purging, cleaning and reorganizing of my pantry today.  It's a good job for a cold day.  Unfortunately, one of the bottles that needed to be emptied and thrown out was a bottle of fish sauce.  My whole kitchen now smells like vagina.  The blue and tan striped basket on the bottom shelf of the pantry is the basket I made in my basket weaving class in September.  It works quite well for my onions.

Yesterday I made soap and today I made more clothes washing powder.  Shout out to Debby for giving me the idea of making my own clothes washing powder, very easy, cheaper, and fewer bad chemicals.  I also learned yesterday that I can make soap without heating it up, it's called cold process and is even easier.  I think I'll try that next time.

My middle daughter and her boyfriend are arriving from Vancouver on Friday, for a short visit, which was part of the pantry purging idea.  There are young people that go home to visit their moms, or grandmas, and go through the pantry and fridge to find the oldest best before dates (at least on tiktok).  The oldest best before date I found in there was 2020, so at least this decade:)  I also pulled the fridge and stove and vacuumed behind them.  I feel better when I can see what I've accomplished, and today does it for me.

Just have to walk the dogs, exercise, and make supper.

Update, I forgot to say that I finally finished Jack's world quilt.  It wasn't hard, I just kept putting it off:)

  1. Beautiful photo of orchids! You sure can get a lot done in one day. All those years of being a nurse must have taught you how to make the most of every day. Or maybe you already knew how to do that and that is what made you such a good nurse (-:

    1. I have a hard time sitting still and I feel better when I can accomplish something that I can see is done.

  2. You are very handy at making lovely things -- the basket, soap, Jack's quilt. Now that you're retired, you can pursue this part of you more!

  3. That's a beautiful quilt! I love it and I bet Jack will too.
You pulled your stove out to vacuum beneath it? I was not aware that was possible.
Your soap is lovely. I used to make soap with my friend Kathleen.

    1. I don't know what American stoves are like but yes, I can pull out my stove, always have. There was lots of dust, fur, and crumbs under it, same with the fridge.
I like making soap but I think I will expand my repetoire and try cold process soap. I like to live on the edge:)

  4. Wow, what a busy day you've had! I am so impressed. Today with the snow and ice I've done next to nothing and I feel a bit guilty about it!

  5. Your daughter is visiting for the warmer weather? The quilt is quite detailed and looks great. I like that it includes the edge of Antarctica.

    1. Actually the weather will be above freezing this week while she's visiting. A happy coincidence.
The quilt is detailed but it was just a large panel of a mercator map. I quilted the lines of longitude and latitude, nothing else.

  6. What a wonderful quilt! I'm inspired by your purging of the pantry and need to do the same. It's so easy to put off tasks that involve taking out a bunch of stuff, then cleaning, and finally putting away/organizing. It does motivate me to have a helper; that's why when a daughter is here, it goes so much better and faster.

    1. I don't mind doing it by myself. I just turn on the radio and putter away.

  7. Good job on the quilt! You likened fish sauce to a certain intimate odour but for me those places have always had the aroma of summer meadows - complete with humming of insects hidden in the grass.

    1. As a nurse, I can assure you that I have smelt many old groins, and the smell is similar:)

  8. I keep finding things that were expired before we moved! Heaven only knows what possessed me to bring them with us.
The quilt is gorgeous. Jack is a lucky lad.

    1. Thanks. It always amazes me how things get pushed to the back of the fridge, or the cupboard, and just get forgotten.
Jack liked looking at the different countries, for about two seconds.

  9. I'm impressed you could move the stove and refrigerator for cleaning. There's no way Andy and I could have done it. I love that quilt!

    1. The stove and fridge aren't heavy, just awkward. I like the quilt too but Jack liked it for about two seconds. Sigh. Maybe when they start looking at maps in school.

If your lady parts smell like fish sauce, you need to see your doctor! You have an STD going on down there!

  14. OMG, I would have LOVED that quilt when I was a kid. Impressive soap-making skills! I think our oldest best-by dates are on some of our spices -- we still have spices we brought with us from New Jersey when we moved here in 2011!

    1. Those spices that you brought with you from New Jersey have no flavour left I'm guessing:)
      I love maps too.
