I start holidays tomorrow.  No Katie, no Jack, no work.  Tonight my employer invoked emergency work rules for nurses in the province which means nurses can be called back from vacations.

Alberta's nurses may soon be forced to work mandatory overtime and cancel holidays in response to a chronic staffing problem worsened by surging COVID-19 hospitalizations.

Alberta Health Services notified the United Nurses of Alberta in an email today that it was invoking a clause in their collective agreement that allows AHS, in an unforeseen emergency, to impose longer work days and direct nurses to other hospitals in order to address staffing gaps.

Fucking hell.  I'm not answering my phone.

  2. Let your conscious be your guide and try to enjoy your get-away the best way you can and for as long as you can!

  3. Sheesh. Cut wages *and* call you back from vacation. Take advantage, much?
Have a good time. I hope the fires and smoke won't ruin your holiday. I'm worried about Dad in Kelowna but he seems to feel he has nothing to worry about, just the unpleasantness for the moment. We've had rain this week and maybe BC will have the same. Fingers crossed! -Kate

  4. The people who cut staffing down to the bone have the gall to threaten underpaid nurses in this way. It sounds like a chapter from George Orwell's "1984". Another good reason for not having a mobile phone (cell phone).

  5. I think for a while at least you should keep your phone firmly off. Don't they understand people need time away from work to rest and recuperate?! Fingers crossed for you to enjoy some time to yourself.

  6. I would 'accidentally' leave the Phone when you go on your Vacay... ooops, because dammit why should you in the Medical Fields suffer any more because of Covidiots?! I don't know about where you are, but here in America, the only ones causing a strain on the System now are the Unvaxxed who are getting Infected and Dying in droves due to their own resistance to what is preventable. Our Administration could not do more than they have to make it FREE and readily available to anyone over 12 now so there's no legit excuses for people to be ignorant and take the risks and overwhelm our Medical System to the point of collapse. Some States have no Beds left, this is going very badly here.

  7. I don't blame you at all for not answering your phone. If anyone deserves a break it's the damn hard-working nurses!
