Jack has gone back to school, wearing red in support of his teachers.  We shall see what happens.  Right now the provincial government has invoked the notwithstanding clause which means there is no legal recourse for the teachers.  They are being forced to accept an offer that 90% of them had rejected.  They don't have a choice and that contract is in effect for the next four years.  The contract gave them a crappy raise and does nothing to address class size or class complexity, which was the main sticking point for the teachers..  If they didn't go back to work today, huge fines personally and for the union as a whole.  The province could have sent them back to work with binding arbritation, but our premier prefers to steamroller over people's rights.

The good news is that the constituents of the minister of education have put forth a recall petition for him.  The UCP likes to pretend it embraces freedom and accountability, hence the availability of a recall petition, but in fact, the UCP embraces autocracy with Danielle Smith being the autocrat/narcissist/micromanager.  You are free to do whatever you want, as long as it's her way.

The other day, someone asked what an emobossing plate is, this is an embossing plate.  When it's been fired, I will roll clay over it and have a relief version of the leaves, as opposed to an impression of the leaves on the clay.  It's not great, but I'm learning.

I walked the dogs this morning.  It was raining and snowing while I walked Charlie but no wind so it was nice.  I took Heidi later and no more rain or snow.  While I was outside I poop scooped and put the rest of the yard stuff either in the shed, or turned it over for the winter.

I also saw a huge pileated woodpecker, but it took off before I could get my phone out of my pocket.  I also saw a muskrat swimming in the pond behind us.  There is ice forming on the pond and I imagine the muskrat is getting ready for winter as well.

This afternoon we're all going to the resiliency class.  Right now we're working on effective communication.  I had homework to do but kept putting it off, looking at it, feeling overwhelmed by it and then this morning, when I wasn't tired I zipped right through it.  Who knew?  I'm supposed to be older and wiser:)  Jack and I finished up his homework yesterday before he was allowed to play Roblox.  Roblox is an excellent motivator for him.

He had swimming last night and he's doing well.  Soccer tomorrow night and then he visits grandma for a couple of nights while we go to the wedding.

I try not to think about the long cold winter too much.  I know it's coming but pretend it's not.  Who knows, maybe I'll even get out on my snowshoes this winter.  One can dream.

  1. I'm already wearing my ski pants outside many days; the wind is ridiculously cutting. I also wear a tuque. It seems strange, when there's no snow yet.

Sorry to hear the Alta gov't has steamrolled over the teachers (and, in effect, the children and their parents). Good luck getting rid of that Conservative crew in your next election. Even better if it could happen sooner.

It's like Saskatchewan. How on earth any majority here can repeatedly vote in this bunch of useless twits, I will never understand. Apparently life isn't something that makes sense anymore and we have to figure out how to navigate it anyway. Maybe that's the challenge of the century.

    1. I wear a toque now too because I can't stand cold ears. I've also switched to my long coat. I'm lucky where I live though, I can usually find some houses or trees to cut the wind.
I feel sick about this government right now. It's beyond disgusting and I feel helpless to do anything. Turns out the Alberta Forever Canadian petition, which only needed 300,000 signatures, got 456,000 signatures. After hearing that I signed up to be a canvasser for another petition, to stop public funds from going to private schools.

  2. Insert fist bump here for sending him back to school in red. Yes, she demotes teachers to second class citizens but Alberta is so strong and free! *barfs*

    1. Jack insisted on wearing red again today, to show his support:) Good on him. This government is filled with hypocrits.
Smith wrote an opinion piece in 2006 about the notwithstanding clause, and how it shouldn't be used.

  3. The leaves relief is interesting. I'm still in the kindergarten-level of pottery class and you look to be doing Big Girl stuff.

  4. RED FOR ED! I've worn it numerous times myself, even though I don't have much red in my closet. Underpaid and overly stressed teachers will have low morale and that can affect how they teach--and how long they stay in the classroom. I was fortunate enough to retire on a positive note without feeling like I was forced out or couldn't stand it any more. The attitude from my still working colleagues is way different. And bound to get worse! :( I'm not exactly a ray of sunshine, am I? Hope the wedding goes well and gives you a fun break.

    1. I could never be a teacher and I admire those who can teach. Alberta will not be able to attract new teachers with this stupid fucking piece of legislation. The UCP has now told Albertans, do what we want you to do, or we'll force you. I had thought I lived in a democracy but I was wrong.

  5. Finding the right time to do something can bring great results. I am just waiting for the right time to do some house cleaning. It's not right yet.

  6. Alberta is like a red state in the US. I wonder if the oil economy fosters these attitudes. Like Texas ( yes I know there's a lot of blue, but it I gerrymandered red).

  7. Was it an elon muskrat? I have heard that they are nasty little creatures with brains the size of peanuts. Nobody goes into teaching to make money. It's a vocation and though teachers deserve to earn a living wage, they also want to work in circumstances that enhance education and children's advancement.

    1. I would not compare a muskrat to elon, such a disservice to muskrats.
I think teaching and nursing are similar in that aspect, you do it because it means something to you, otherwise there are easier ways to make a living.

  8. You have to ask yourself "why the hell to the people of Alberta vote for people like Smith & her minions?" Do they not understand the value that teachers bring to society? Are they that stupid? Unfortunately, I'm afraid the answer to both questions is "yes." Good move on sending Jack back in red.

    1. A lot of Albertans, even conservative Albertans, are shocked and appalled by this move. The conservative governments of earlier times were more centrist.

    1. Jack is doing well. It's good for him to have structure to his day, he does better when there is structure. Don't we all?

  13. I've never heard of emobossing, but that's an interesting idea.

I used to dread doing my French homework, back when I was taking French classes about ten years ago (!). And then I'd do it and it would be a breeze, and I'd think, "Why all the dread?"

  14. Teachers and nurses always get screwed and don't even try to tell me it's not because traditionally, most are women.
It's forty degrees here this morning and I'm freezing. I don't know how you stand your winters.
You're keeping Jack busy and that is great.
