Jack and I finally got our Christmas tree up yesterday. I always love it when it's up, but hate putting it up. It's not even hard to do, three pieces go together and the tree already has the lights on it. Ta da! I take my time going through the ornaments because so many of them brink back memories for me. Now Jack has his own ornaments with the date on them and he likes that too. I also have a few snow globes that play music, so that interested him for quite awhile.
A lot of my ornaments are glass and he helped me hang them. Of course one got broken and I told him that I loved him more than I loved that ornament. That stopped him from beating himself up. Awhile ago, I heard this woman talking on the radio about how one Christmas she had accidently broken some of her grandmother's good dishes. Her mother called out from the other room, "I love you more than those dishes." and it touched a cord in me. Wouldn't we all want that? And don't we all love people more than our things?
It's funny how the universe continues to teach us lessons, not matter how old we get. I hope to remain curious and learning until the day I die.
I first made these cookies a few years ago when I watched Alton Brown make them on his show. I tried to make them, they turned out and now they're one of my favorites. Chocolate Peppermint Pinwheel cookies. If I'm honest, I think mine turned out better than his. The only problem with them is I want to eat all of them. I think I'll make another batch.
I signed up for another pottery course this morning, and Jack wanted to take one too, so I got that done as well. Saturdays he'll have pottery and Sundays he'll have swimming. The evening swimming and soccer didn't work well for him as he got overtired. He's still going to bed at 7pm so it was hard for him to unwind after his lessons for him to fall asleep easily. He was up until 8 or 830pm and he didn't sleep well. Maybe in another year or two he can take after supper lessons again.
I pick up my glazed and fired pieces tonight and I can hardly wait. I was more adventurous with my glazing this time and I guess I'll see how it turned out. Fingers crossed.
Katie's trusteeshipe still isn't finished and won't be completed for almost a year. I heard from Canada Disability Benefit yesterday and the guy reassured me that we can reapply at that time. Now we just have to get the provincial government on board with that decision, and I need it in writing. I'm learning :)
Not much else going on here. Baking, vacuuming (the semi-annual dog shed is ongoing), and staying warm. It's too cold to even take the dogs for a walk, soon we'll all have cabin fever.

The tree looks beautiful and I love what you said to Jack. It's true for many of us but NOT ALL. For too many things and money are more important than people. Seeing what's going on in my country has made me a real cynic. It sounds like you'll be keeping busy! I admire you for getting Jack involved in so many activities; it's exhausting for everyone. That's a relief that the trusteeship is in process. A year though??? That's outrageous.
ReplyDeletePeople do matter more than stuff though, whether we get it or not.
DeleteJack loves working with clay and has been bugging me to take a class. The young lady who house sits for us, also teaches kids, so it all worked out.
The trusteeship process will take so long because there is a backlog of cases (I'm guessing because of all the crap with the federal and provincial governments, the Canada Disability Benefit, and AISH). Sigh.
I find your tree to be beauteous. I'm almost motivated to put up mine. That was a wonderful thing you said to Jack. Really wonderful. That's a long time for doing the guardianship.
ReplyDeleteNot guardianship, but rather trusteeship which is about money and property. I never thought to get trusteeship because my life was upside down when we applied for guardianship and I never thought of Katie owning anything. Apparently a bank account is owning something. Now I know:)
DeleteJudging from the photos of your pinwheel cookies and Alton Brown's cookies, yours are much more accomplished! His pinwheel technique looks kinda shaky.
ReplyDeleteThank you kind lady. They combine two of my favorite flavours, peppermint and chocolate. Angels sing when I eat them:)
DeleteThose cookies are to die for! Drooling over here. I used to bake and decorate sugar cookies with my kids before Christmas. Nowadays I dont do anymore of those sorts of seasonal treats. Instead, this year it's granola, muffins, and wholewheat doughnuts to take to the city for between-meal snacks.
ReplyDelete"I love you more than I love those dishes."
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful thing to say to someone. I want to remember that.
The tree looks great and the cookies, dare I say it? look even better.
I hope your fired pieces all make you happy.
Those pinwheel cookies look great!
ReplyDeleteI imagine many of us can think back to a time when we broke something and didn't hear "I love you more than that (object)." What a difference it might have made if THAT had been the message.
What a sweet line! “I love you more than…”
ReplyDeleteThat's a great line. We could all have benefited from hearing that as kids when we accidentally broke something.
ReplyDeleteThe tree looks grand. I will use that line when something gets broken, but I hope not to have to. It is inevitable though, hey.

Your tree is beautiful. I don't mind putting up, but I really hate taking down. We used to do big trees, lot's of ornaments, took forever. One ornament was always over looked and broken. Those are good memories for Jack.
ReplyDeleteI hate taking it down too, but it's worth it to just have everything put away. I like how skinny the tree is, doesn't take up much space.
Delete"I love you more than those dishes." Omg, top five sweetest affirmation ever.
ReplyDeleteThose cookies are indeed impressive.
I heard it from this woman and loved it.

It is easy to see why you opt for an artificial tree. The choice is environmentally responsible as Canada only has an estimated 300,000,000,000 trees left. As for " I told him that I loved him more than I loved that ornament", that was quick thinking and the remark will inform my repertoire next time Shirley breaks one of my cherished wine glasses.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand needles dropping everywhere and this fake tree will see me out:)
DeleteI can't take credit for quick thinking about the breakage, I heard it from this woman.

Your tree looks a lot like mine. Three parts to put together and it is pre-lit. I have allergies so I opted for an artificial tree years ago. Those cookies would be my downfall I expect. They look so good. And "I love you more than those dishes" strikes a chord with me too, and it is something that I will remember the next time something material breaks.
ReplyDeleteWhen I bake I put things in the freezer as soon as they cool off, or I too would eat all of them, or enough to give me a stomach ache.
DeleteI heard that quote about the dishes from this woman.

That was a great reassurance you gave Jack, I will remember this. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI felt better and Jack felt better. Much better than me getting mad and his getting sad, ashamed, or angry.
DeleteThat is the best possible counsel to give a child over a broken ornament, toy, whatever the item is, really doesn't matter. Those cookies look wonderful, move over, Alton Brown!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jim. There is a writer, Jared Diamond, he wrote a book called "Guns, Germs, and Steel". It's about how the world developed, how societies developed around the world and at the beginning he talks about a friend of his in New Guinea who asked Jared, why do white people have so much cargo. Since then I've tended to think of all of the stuff I buy as cargo, which makes me look at things differently. But most importantly was the young woman I heard on radio, in changing how I think about my cargo.
