I made this heart for my backyard.  It was easy, just roll the clay over the embossing plate.  Done.  You can see a couple of plates on the bottom right which I had such high hopes for but they turned out truly hideous.  Still learning.

I went out for supper with my son last night, the first time in years.  It was nice.  We talked.  He talked a lot and I listened.  I am hopeful for him but we'll see.  A year of sobriety, in 20 plus years of alcoholism is a good first step.  I'm proud of him for that.

We had our snowstorm, some parts of the province got hit much harder than others.  We didn't do too bad, although I am glad I wasn't on the highway.  I had to drive to the other side of Sherwood Park that day, and that was hard enough.  People probably don't realize that you can't see any road markers on the road during a snowstorm.  It's a game of guess where the lane is and it's helps if you know the roads well.  Everything is plowed now, so much easier to get around.

It's cold though, bloody cold.  Right now it's -31C with the wind chill and I am quite happy I found some snow pants that fit me, with all the winter toques and mitts.  Waiting for the bus with Jack isn't all that nice.  He seems oblvious to the cold, while I worry about frostbite for him.

I don't know how many of you have watched "Ted Lasso", I would highly recommend, but on it, Ted makes cookies for his boss and she loves them.  I saw the recipe someplace online and saved it.  Yesterday I made them and the cookies are truly lovely.  I tried looking it up to see if there is an official recipe and what I found was hundreds of recipes that claim to be the Ted Lasso biscuit recipe.  Regardless, the recipe I used had almond flour and regular flour and it was delicious.  They're almost all gone:)

That's it.  A cold day and a good day to stay home and work on clay or on the quilt.  Haven't decided yet.

  1. I love Ted Lasso and also its sort of sister show, "Shrinking" although I almost gave up on it at first. The cookies look like a type of shortbread. (which I love anyway) I'm glad your son and you are enjoying some time together; you are hopefully realistic which is a good place to be. That weather! I've never experienced anything like that. 20s is really cold here. (we're wimps!)

    1. I'd like to watch "Shrinking", it's on my list. I love shortbread and these delivered. The cookies only lasted a day. We ate half a pound of butter in a day!
Today is even colder. A good day to stay home.

  2. Did the cookies have an almond flavor? Almond is one of my favorites by far.
That is too cold. I am telling you. You are NOT supposed to live in a place where it gets that cold. I mean- even the mastodons could not bear it forever.
    You're tough though.
I think that is awesome news about you son. A year is a long time. Damn.

I'm not a fan of the cold but you dress for it and get on with life. What are the choices?
I'm glad he's sober. He looks happier.

  6. I can not contemplate temperatures that low. That's a whole other wardrobe! I wonder why Jack does not feel the cold, that's not really a good thing.

    1. He just seems to run warm. Thankfully when he got off the bus yesterday, he was fully dressed and wrapped up.

  9. Sadly I haven't seen Ted Lasso on either Netflix or Amazon over here yet but everyone raves about it so I'll watch out for it. And I'm so, so glad you got to be with your son and that he is sober! Well done to him, keep it up! What a lovely (if freezing) post!

    1. If you love swearing, as I do, you'll love the show. One of my favorite characters was Roy fucking Kent.
I'm so thankful my son is sober too.

  10. Hope your son continues on this path. Good to hear of his progress. I watched Ted Lasso after it had been out a bit; I thought I wouldn't like it but instead found many of the episodes incredibly touching.

  11. I have watched the first season of Ted Lasso, and I loved the show. I plan on watching the second season soon. The show has heart. I didn't know that the Ted Lasso recipe was a thing! Ah..the internet. It sounds so cold where you live. You help me not to complain when I feel cold, as to you it wouldn't be cold!

    1. Cold is relative. In the fall, 0C feels so cold, in the spring 0C feels warm.
Ted Lasso is a shot of kindness and funny in a cold world.

  13. The heart plate is gorgeous. Glad you talked with your son. Alcoholism is in my family too. Some do make it & I hope he is one of them. Cold weather is tough. It is funny how when you're young like Jack it's nothing but when your older it becomes more of an issue. Hope you have a wonderful holiday.

    1. Alcoholism runs through my family, and my son's father's family too. I hope he makes it too.

  14. Did the recipe tell you to whip the butter for 3-5 minutes before adding sugar? I'm tempted to make a batch but I'm not sure I have 3-5 minutes of whipping patience.

    1. Nope. Everything just went in my food processor. But if you didn't have that, I would just mix it by hand.

  15. The cold where you are reminds me of *To Build A Fire* by Jack London.
My father who never visited the North Americas but would have liked to,
spoke of London's story when I was a wee boy. Wonderful to have supper with
your son for the first time in 20 years. I share Miss Moon's love of almond.

    1. I remember reading that story as a kid. Your father would have found a truly enormous country that often shocks people when they first arrive, because of the vastness.

    2. The vastness. My father's very words.
He read Thomas Wolfe, Steinbeck, John Dos Passos, Ellen Glasgow,
Willa Cather, Upton Sinclair, Sinclair Lewis, Kerouac, Nelson Algren.
He listened to my late brother George's tales of Southern California.
George met Charles Bukowski, the only writer who expressed contempt
for the American Dream. Arthur Miller expressed his disappointment in it,
but only Bukowski said it was bullshit. I reserve judgment like
Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby.
