We made it to Canmore and back. The wedding was lovely, except for the actual ceremony which took place in the pouring rain. It was 5C and there was also a strong wind which made it feel even colder, but we all survived, although there was a fair bit of grumbling. The rest of the wedding celebrations took place indoors in a lovely venue with the mountains all around. My nephew was the officiant and he did a wonderful job, even as his script was dissolving in the rain:) My niece was beautiful, her groom was handsome, and the whole thing was so nice.
I caught up with family as we all stayed at the same hotel. There was a lot of talking and hugging, and catching up. I hadn't seen most of my sister in law's family in twenty years and I was shocked at how much older everyone looked, unlike me, whom I have watched age in the mirror everyday for the past twenty years. My sister in law and I even had time for a nice long walk, which we both love.
There was Proseco and speeches that made me cry (probably helped along by the Proseco). My niece and her new husband were both good sports about the weather, and the speeches made by friends and parents.
The day of the the wedding my husband and I drove up to Lake Minnewanka to visit Bankhead, TwoJack Lake, and Johnson Lake. All was going well. We went for a nice walk at Bankhead (an old coal mining town which was disassembled and moved in 1922 when the mine was shut down). It was raining lightly, so not too bad. We ran into two bachelor elk, enjoying the peace and quiet, and we promptly left them to enjoy the peace and quiet.
We carried on to Johnson Lake which neither of us had seen before. There is a sweet little bridge and a creek there. I was busy taking photos, moving down the creek, while my husband was on the phone, trying to sort out a problem with the MRI scanner long distance.
I was doing fine, watching my footing, not doing anything stupid when I hit a patch of mud that was as slippery as ice. The worst part is the my right knee was forced into hyperextension, not something my knee can do anymore, thanks to arthritis. I screamed, because it hurt, a lot. My husband heard me, hung up the phone and came running (he thought I was being attacked by a wild animal), at which point he also discovered the mud was as slippery as ice. He fell flat on his back. He got right back up, found me, and helped me up. Both of us were covered in mud, shaken up, and sore. He has bad arthritis in his one hip and an old back injury, plus we're not young anymore.
We drove into Banff, a couple of minutes away and found a pharmacy. I went in to buy some muscle relaxants and ibuprofen. When I came out of the pharmacy I saw a woman who looked really rough, and then I realized it was a mirror:) My hair was flattened and soaking wet, and I was covered in mud, quite the sight.
We went back to the hotel, rested, took pills, and were fine to go to the wedding thankfully.
My husband was still sore yesterday as we drove back home but feels much better today. I'm doing fine with no ill effects thank goodness.
The photo below was the scene of the mud crime, nothing dangerous, just unexpected.
We'll definitely be going back to Canmore. We've never visited there, just stopped there for gas and lunch on the way through. It's a lovely town, with new moutains and trails to explore, that we've never seen before. Plus they had the most amazing quilt shop that I've ever seen. Maybe we'll go back in the spring and take Jack.

Glad your injuries from the mud slip-and-fall weren't worse than they were. I haven't been to Canmore in years but I agree, it is a gorgeous place.
ReplyDeleteWe are definitely going back there.
DeleteGlad you both came out mostly unscathed. Falls are scary enough, and to be also covered in mud would be the straw that broke this camel's back.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny in retrospect but at the time I was madder than a wet hen.
DeleteI am pleased that all turned out fine at the wedding. Both of you falling over like that makes me think you should audition for the circus. Pratfalls usually produce hilarity in the big top. You will both need bulbous red noses.
ReplyDeleteWe're both too old and stiff for Cirque du Soleil sadly. And to make matters even worse, I didn't have a hat for the wedding.
DeleteI'm so glad that the falls weren't any worse and that the pain is better. It's scary at our ages because our poor bodies are much more fragile! It sounds like the wedding went very well except for the weather; it's wonderful to catch up with family. That's not always the case in my family--some of them can be quite unpleasant.
ReplyDeleteIt was so nice to see everybody. I don't get along with all my family either, but my one sister can't travel now because of pain and arthritis. She and I don't get along, toxic christianity. No thanks.
DeleteThat's scary to fall like that. Your husband sure had your back.
ReplyDeleteIt's happened to us before actually. I slipped on some ice thirteen years ago in the middle of nowhere and landed on my camera that time. That hurt way worse.
DeleteOh no! Oh dear!
ReplyDelete... and then you made me laugh out loud with the mirror thing. Glad neither of you are worse for the wear -- there are many who wouldnt have walked away seriously unscathed.
That mirror was so funny. We're okay, just a little stiff still:)
DeleteThe stream with cute little bridge looks so nice. I'm glad you had a good time, in spite of your falls. Yes, you are old enough to take a fall.
ReplyDeleteI was just curious where Canmore is, and it is nearly a four hour drive from your home, and into the mountains.
Canmore is the same distance, maybe a little closer, as Jasper. A new mountain retreat.
DeleteCanmore is amazing, imo. I've been to a new years eve wedding there, outside, so definitely cold, but they served hot chocolate. Beautiful! Your description had me lol'ing but I bet in addition to the pain, this experience was quite a fright. Glad it worked out okay.
ReplyDeleteThe cold I could deal with but the rain really sucked. Most of us were soaked right through. The poor bride and bridesmaids had bare shoulders. They're made of sterner stuff than me.
DeleteOh gosh, I am glad you are both okay! What a mess to clean up and the pain on top of it. It seems like so many weddings are outdoors anymore. We have attended two recently where we got caught in a downpour.
ReplyDeleteWe were lucky that the hotel had a laundry room because the coat I wore to the wedding was covered in mud. My husband's coat was leather and I could just wipe that off. It kept raining all night and it eventually turned into snow.
DeleteSounds eventful! I'm so glad you lived to tell the tale. Mud is treacherous. It sounds like a happy wedding, despite weather.
ReplyDeleteEventful is a good way to put it:) It was a happy wedding and so honoured to be there.
DeleteI'm glad you weren't seriously hurt!
ReplyDeleteWe're still a little stiff, but otherwise fine.
DeleteOh my goodness, I'm so sorry you both fell! I'm finding as I get older that I'm more afraid of falling now. In younger years snow and ice wouldn't have bothered me but I guess now a fall could be much more serious. I'm glad you're ok though!
ReplyDeleteAt the time is was not nice, but now we have a good story to tell:)
DeleteMud crime!. Good to know you survived it but, well, scary, two down in the wilderness is never a good setting what with wild animals and so on.
ReplyDeleteWe weren't that far in the wilderness and the wild animals want to avoid us as much as we want to avoid them.
DeleteI hope that knee hyperextension doesn't come back to haunt you. These things can do that sometimes. But honestly- thank goodness you were both all right.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good wedding in a beautiful place. May the bride and groom enjoy many happy years together!
I was surprised my knee could still do that but it hurt like hell, no lingering pain though which is good.
DeleteThe wedding was lovely and I'm so glad we were able to go.
Beautiful pics. I have wished for many years that I lived nearer the Rockies.
ReplyDeleteWe are very lucky to live so close to them.
DeleteThat stream doesn't LOOK treacherous -- I can see why it would have been deceiving! Glad you and your husband weren't more hurt by your falls, and glad the wedding went well despite the weather.
